Detoxification Protocol:
Anyone seeking to remove the xenobiotics (harmful foreign substances) from their body must be committed to following a very specific treatment regimen. If you are not willing to be patient with the process, undergo some inconvenience and make life style changes, then you will not (I repeat)--will not get well. There are no "if, and/or buts" about it. If you can't do that, then you and I will be frustrated. You will waste your money and my time. Patients who are in a health crisis must follow a treatment regimen that does not worsen the crisis. The protocol that I have developed takes this into account. With that said, let me outline what may be included in the examination and protocol.
1. Thorough health history with dates (a log) of the toxic symptoms, treatments you have used. A Metabolic Screening Questionnaire (Jeffrey Bland, PhD)
2. Intestinal permeability status test done with a urinary sample using lactulose and mannitol. Comprehensive Digestive Stool Analysis to check for parasites and efficiency of digestive enzymes.
3. Liver function tests to determine if your liver is able to cleanse itself. These are done by analyzing urinary contents after taking challenge doses of caffeine, aspirin, and acetaminophen (3 separate tests).
4. Compatibility Profile to determine what biocompatible dental restorative materials can be used in your mouth. This is done on a blood sample. (Or results of EAV testing)
5. Complete Mineral Urine Analysis (including toxic minerals) to analyze essential micro-nutrient levels and levels of harmful metals.
6. Sedimentation Rate and CBC with differential, (check for segmented neutrophils).
7. Rita Meter test to determine where to start replacing the toxic materials.
8. Prophyrin Profile (fractionated).
9. Nutritional Program to balance your body biochemistry as much as possible before replacement begins. This may take several weeks but is absolutely essential to restoring health.
10. Physician consultation, when appropriate, to discuss the proposed treatments and get recommendations
11. Treatment Plan with Consultation. Alternatives will be discussed and treatment objectives outlined.
12. Finally, if we (you and I) feel comfortable with each other and have each others trust, then the restorative appointments will be made. The removal protocol involves strict procedures to protect you from mercury exposure and additional contamination. It is approved by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology. I will carefully explain it to you when we reach this juncture.
13. Post removal treatment may call for a series of IV (or oral) chelations to remove the mercury burden. Whether on not this is necessary depends on the result of the Challenge Test and other laboratory results. Proper nutrition for detoxification will be continually emphasized. I will want you to complete a symptom history at 6 month intervals to evaluate your recovery. Occasionally, additional laboratory testing may be necessary to determine nutrient status.
The approximate cost of the initial examination and foundational laboratory testing[1] is $850.00. The fee for the initial examination without laboratory testing is $125.00.
Many of you are already chronically ill, have seen lots of physicians, have experimented with several treatment recommendations, and have tried many allopathic and homeopathic medications. You are environmental reactors with an exaggerated sensitivity to hydrocarbons, e.g. perfumes, household cleaning agents, pesticides. Sometimes the most innocent exposure can throw you into bed. You have difficulty concentrating and making decisions. You are impatient with treatment results and too quickly abandon a therapy without giving it time to work. Our objective is to help you get well, not make you worse. I will bend a little in my program-but very little. The key word here is FOCUS. You must first focus on being able to detoxify before you do any secondary treatments. This regimen is the result of extensive continuing education, much research and then clinical experience. It gets good results but requires your commitment to following the outline I have laid out here. Without doing this, you most likely will be worse off then when we started.
Sincerely,

Don H. Lowrance, MS, DDS, CCN

Frequently Asked Questions:
1. Will my insurance help? Most probably not. If we can demonstrate, by a heavy metal challenge test, that you have a body burden of toxic metals; then, you have a slight chance with medical insurance. Dental Insurance will not help unless the old amalgam fillings are broken and need replacing from a functional standpoint.
2. How quickly will I see results? Some patients begin to feel better with the pre-removal nutritional program. Others notice a difference during actual treatment. Still others get better gradually. The latter was my case. At 6 weeks, I was certain I was improving. I believe that I improved each year for the next 3 years. How well you do is related to how closely you follow your detoxification diet and how much physical and psychological stress you remove from your life. The key words here are focus and patience.
3. Will you protect me from further exposure to mercury during the amalgam removals? Yes. I follow the protocol established by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology which is the leading research and teaching organization in this field.
4. How many visits are involved? It may take as many as 10 but usually 6 visits will suffice. Four of the visits are used for the amalgam removal with 10 days between visits.
5. Will it hurt? I do everything necessary to minimize any pain or discomfort that you might have. It does me no good to hurt you.
6. Will it cost a lot? The answer to that depends on how many amalgam fillings you have and the type of materials your Compatibility Profile says that we can use as a replacement. At this printing the worse case I have had cost $5,720.00. It is usually in the range of $2000 to $3000.
7. Will I get better? That depends on you! What I am offering is a controlled and logical way to detoxify your body of the xenobiotics that have contributed to or directly caused your chronic health problems. If you keep challenging your body and stressing it so that it stays in crisis, you will not improve! You have to be patient, stay with your nutritional program, trust the advice I am giving you and give your body the best chance it has to recover.
8. What about my root canals? I will give you the pros and cons of the issue and let you decide what you want to do. The root canals will not be addressed until all the amalgam is out and you are stable.
9. What about the crowns I already have? If they appear to be free of any amalgam under them and are well fitting and serviceable crowns, I would try to keep them. If you or I are suspicious of the content of the metal aggravating your recovery, then I will remove them.
10. Cavitations, should I have them done? Not at first. Stay focused. It may be something you do in the future, but not at first.
11. What about the materials you will use? In the past, dental materials were developed for longevity and low cost with very little regard to toxicity. Many of these materials have been "grandfathered in" by the FDA meaning no toxicity testing was done. It is interesting to note that the EPA looks at the waste material as a "hazardous waste". What I do is try to use materials that are biocompatible for you. That is, they have the least or minimal toxicity to your system. Often this is done at the expense of durability. The most durable materials happen to be the most toxic. It is counterproductive to replace a toxic material with another toxic material. Even though the replacement materials are not as durable, they hold up well under most circumstances.
12. Is your office a safe environment for MCS (multiple chemical sensitivity) patients? My office is as safe as I can make it but there are compromises I have had to make. I do not own my office and have no control over how the owner treats termites and other pests. I have removed as much scented materials as I can and still be able to sterilized materials and disinfect surfaces. I run an ozone purifier at night and on weekend to deodorize and kill mildew and germs. I also use an ionization filter to further trap airborne irritants. If there is some particular problem you have, we will try to accommodate you within reason. Additionally, I still treat patients who are oblivious to these problems and desire a different atmosphere than you. My hope is that the day will come when I can build a free standing office using nontoxic materials and one designed for just MCS patients and detoxification. For that to happen, I need more patients like you.
13. I am a vegetarian. How will that affect my treatment? It has been my experience and the experience of many physicians and CCN (certified clinical nutritionists) that a high carbohydrate diet increases the problem with Chronic Fatigue. I recommend a diet with 40% carbohydrates, 30% protein and 30% fat.
A word of warning. The absolute worse thing you can do is have your amalgams replaced by some one who doesn't believe in this and has no appreciation for nutrition. Second to that, is pushing your adrenal gland to do too much before it has recovered. It takes almost a year for the adrenal gland to regain full function after just one week on cortisone. If you have adrenal insufficiency due to xenobiotic poisoning, it will probably take longer. If you burn it out by over doing, it will most probably never recover and you won't get well.
A word of advice. FOCUS. Many of the mercury toxic patients I have talked with are trying to do too much and too many things at the same time. Don't do this. You will keep your body in crisis so that it can't recover. Focus, be patient, and you will be rewarded.
A word of caution. This is a very controversial issue. It is both scientific and political. The reputation and integrity of a national trade organization is at stake. With this in mind, many dentists that you talk to would be offended if you suggested , even indirectly, that amalgam is a toxic substance; there was a time when I would have been. Be discreet and use wisdom in your inquiries. It is my desire to help you, but, I have no desire to be a martyr and lose my license.
A personal word of hope. Psalms 139:14 says our bodies are "fearfully and wonderfully made". God, the Creator, made us that way. God is the source and wellspring of all our hope--for now and the future. It is his desire that we be happy and that we enjoy Him forever. Yet, physically we are all being randomized to the universe. Saint Paul, speaking about himself, said that "outwardly" he was "wasting away" but "inwardly" he was being "renewed daily". Again, he explains that it is the inward (spiritual person) that is of ultimate importance. What is important is how the inward person worships God.. It is God who is our hope, not our health or our wealth. Therefore, we each have the same hope and desires and face the same future. My desire is to keep this earthen vessel running as well as possible until Christ comes again but not to become so preoccupied with its maintenance that I begin to worship the created thing rather than the Creator. My hope is to not love life more than I love the Creator of my life. My hope is rooted and anchored in knowing Him as my Savior. He has saved me from the consequences of my sins, He has saved me from living a life of fear and frustration and He has saved me from the fear of death (Rev. 12:11). He can do the same for you or anyone who asks (Rev. 3:20). May God bless you as you learn to lean on Him in your illness.
